Kuytul's prison ward was raided — even the inside of his sock was inspected

Alparslan Kuytul's lawyer, Ömer Hakseven, announced on 18 September 2026 that his client's ward had been raided. Hakseven had delivered the files relating to the cases opened against Kuytul in person, splitting them over two days; he had been told that the files could not be sent in through the prison property office and could only be handed over by the lawyer himself. The files he delivered on the first day were taken as they were going into the ward, and he was told they would be inspected and handed over afterwards; the files he handed over on the second day were allowed into the ward, and Kuytul left them inside.

One day after the files entered the ward, on the day the post was published, the ward was raided. According to Hakseven, all the belongings in the ward were scattered on the grounds of a search, Kuytul was made to take off his slippers and even the inside of his sock was inspected, and his clothes were searched with a detector. The file folders the lawyer had delivered and the blue folders were taken away, and all the documents were left behind in loose sleeves.

The reason given was the metal fastener inside the blue folders; it was said that this piece of metal posed a danger and that folders sold in the canteen could be bought instead. Hakseven pointed out that while knives, forks and razor blades are permitted in the prison, the small piece of metal inside a blue folder is counted as dangerous.

That the defence files were collected the very next day, after it had been made a condition that they enter only through the lawyer, is part of a picture Hakseven describes as a systematic policy of intimidation that has continued since the day Kuytul was arrested. Hakseven wrote that these are pretexts, and listed the following: that Kuytul was exiled to Erzurum even though he was arrested in Adana and his family is there; that his wife was also arrested and exiled to Samsun; that the first ward he was placed in received no sunlight and had no yard; that he is given neither his right to a barber nor a pair of moustache scissors; that the objections to the block placed on his pension are left hanging; that in cold weather he is not given his own belongings and is directed to the canteen; that lawyer visits are restricted and no visit is allowed after 11 p.m.; that the right to a video call, granted even to prisoners serving aggravated life sentences, is withheld from him. Today I learned that Alparslan Kuytul's ward has been raided!

I had myself delivered the files concerning the cases opened against him, splitting them over two days. They had told me that the files could not go through the property office and that only I could hand them over in person. They took the files I delivered on the first day as they were going into his ward, saying they would inspect them and hand them over afterwards. On the second day they allowed the files I handed over into the ward. He left them inside.

The next day (today) his ward was raided and everything was scattered. Under the pretext of a search they scattered all the belongings in his ward. They even made Alparslan Kuytul take off his slippers and inspected the inside of his sock! They searched his clothes with a detector. They took the file folders I had given and the blue folders, and left all the documents in loose sleeves.

And the reason is the metal fastener in the blue folders! It supposedly poses a danger, and he could buy the folders sold in the canteen instead. Knives, forks and razor blades are permitted, but the small piece of metal inside a blue folder is supposedly dangerous.

It is obvious that these are pretexts. Since the day he was arrested, a systematic policy of intimidation has been applied to Alparslan Kuytul.

• He was arrested in Adana and his family is in Adana, but he was exiled to Erzurum.
• His wife was likewise arrested and exiled to Samsun.
• When he first entered the prison he was held in a ward on the middle floor that received no sunlight, from which the sky could not be seen and which had no yard. Later, when he asked for it to be changed, he was moved to a ward on the lower floor.
• He needs to shave, but his right to a barber is not granted. He is not even given a pair of moustache scissors.
• A block is placed on his pension, in an attempt to put him in a difficult position. The objections are also left hanging.
• Although the weather is cold, his own belongings are not accepted and he is forced to buy from the canteen.
• Lawyer visits are restricted, and no visit is allowed after 11 p.m.
• He has various rights, such as the right to exercise, which are not even mentioned.
• The right to a video call, given even to those sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment, is not given to him.
• On top of all this, his ward is raided and he is treated with disrespect.

In short, everything in the course of his detention has been turned into torment for Alparslan Kuytul. To oppress a person this much is not normal.

This treatment must end immediately, and prisons must not be turned into places of torture.
